Turquoise waters, perfect wind conditions and the mountains of Morocco’s northern coast as a backdrop: that’s kitesurfing in Tarifa, right on the Strait of Gibraltar.
Tarifa’s unique geographical location makes it the windiest place in Europe – and therefore the kitesurfing capital of Europe. The Strait of Gibraltar, a waterway only 13 kilometer wide, is bordered on both sides by mountains: the Rock of Gibraltar on the European side and the Rif Mountains, including the prominent Jebel Musa, on the Moroccan side. As the wind passes through, it is accelerated by the funnel created by the rising terrain, a mechanism known as the Venturi effect.
Kitesurfing All Year Round
Tarifa’s main kitesurfing spots are the beaches of Valdevaqueros and Los Lances, where kitesurfers enjoy great wind conditions all year round. Both stretches are several kilometers long and offer parking, some basic accommodation, a few surf schools and laid-back beach bars (chiringuitos). Chiringuitos Tangano, Tumbao and Waves are popular surfer hangouts with a bohemian vibe that contrasts with the more pedestrian beach tourism elsewhere.
