Playa de los Alemanes

Playa de los Alemanes from Mirador Camarinal, Zahara de los Atunes, Costa de la Luz, Spain

The name literally means “beach of the Germans”. Legend has it that it comes from some German marines who took refuge there after World War II. In fact, during the war, German submarines refueled at nearby Cabo de Plata as they tried to avoid the Allies. Perhaps their crews remembered the natural beauty of the place when they were looking for a remote place to settle after the war?

Playa de los Alemanes Hideout

Some say that the place was even used by some Nazi grandees as a gateway to more remote hideouts, such as in South America. There is even a documentary video, “La playa de los Alemanes”, which tries to shed some light on the history of the place. Today, the hillside hinterland overlooking the beach is mostly an urbanization of fancy luxury chalets.
