My favorite thing about living in Munich is the city’s proximity to the dreamland scenery of the Alps. Its mountain ranges are just a leisurely 60-minute drive away from my home. The whole region is traversed by a huge network of marked trails as well as an extensive range of serviced huts and cable cars. Which puts even more demanding routes within reach of average hikers like myself.
Mountain huts are great places to recharge your batteries while enjoying their rustic charm and traditional, handmade food (not forgetting the legendary Bavarian beer). Places operated by the Deutscher Alpenverein are generally open almost all year round. The huts of local farmers are usually serviced between May and September only, when the cattle grazes on the surrounding pastures.
